MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) – A McKinney mosque was hit by paintballs early Sunday morning, leading a Muslim advocacy group to call for a state and federal investigation for a possible hate crime.
The McKinney Police Department has not commented so far on the attack, which took place at the McKinney Islamic Association, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
In a news release, the advocacy group said that as many as two dozens paintballs hit the mosque sometime between 11:00 p.m. Saturday night and 5:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. “Worshippers have reportedly been verbally harassed recently by young people who gather near the mosque,” CAIR said in the news release. “Local police told mosque officials that they will recommend stepped up patrols in the area.”
In addition to the paintballs aimed at the building, a member of the congregation had his vehicle hit after he left the facility, CAIR said.
