NEWS: “Texas Man Pleads Guilty in Bomb Threat Against Tennessee Mosque”

From The Daily News Journal

NASHVILLE — A Texas man pleaded guilty today in federal court to making a bomb threat against the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro in September 2011.

Judge Aleta Trauger sentenced 25-year-old Javier Alan Correa to five years probation, with no prison time.

Among the conditions of the probation are that Correa must work to obtain a GED, participate in drug and alcohol treatments, undergo drug and alcohol testing and refrain from contacting the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro.

During the first eight months of his probation, Correa will be on house arrest, only allowed to travel to school, work or to see a doctor, according to a judge’s order.

As part of the plea, Correa read a statement of remorse apologizing for the bomb threat.

He said he was drinking at home when CNN aired a story about the Islamic Center.

“I was just ignorant at the time,” Correa said. “Plus I had been drinking alcohol.”

Correa said after making the call, he realized what he had done was wrong.

“I felt awful,” he said, later adding “I don’t have any prejudice against Muslims or any other group of people.”

Correa said he believes the USA is truly a melting pot, and that some of his own ancestors were Muslims.

No one from the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro was present to hear Correa’s apology.
